• The English/Literature Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective
• instruction in English Language and Literature in English to secondary school students in the
• Serere community, in line with the national curriculum. The role combines strong subject mastery
• with practical, learner-centered teaching methods, equipping students with reading, writing,
• comprehension, oral communication, and critical/literary analysis skills needed for academic
• advancement and future careers. The English/Literature Teacher works closely with the Director
• of Studies, fellow subject teachers, and AsOne Ministries leadership to promote academic
• excellence and nurture students’ confidence in communication and the humanities within a
• Christ-centered learning environment.

• • Plan, prepare, and deliver English Language and Literature in English lessons in line with the
• national secondary curriculum and Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) syllabus
• requirements.
• • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment schedules for all assigned classes
• (O-Level and/or A-Level as applicable).
• • Deliver clear, engaging lessons that build strong grammar, composition, comprehension, oral
• communication, and literary analysis skills.
• • Use varied teaching methods, including guided reading, creative writing, debates, drama, and
• discussion-based analysis of set texts and poetry, to accommodate different learning styles
• and ability levels.
• • Set, administer, and mark class tests, assignments, essays, and examinations, providing timely
• and constructive feedback.
• • Track learner performance and progress, identifying gaps and providing remedial support
• where needed.
• • Prepare students for national examinations (UCE/UACE) and internal assessments, ensuring
• full syllabus coverage within the academic calendar.
• • Guide students in the study of prescribed literature set texts (novels, plays, poetry, short
• stories), oral literature, and functional/creative writing skills.
• • Integrate values education, critical thinking, and communication skills relevant to everyday
• life, in line with Ministry of

• and Sports (MoES) guidelines.
• Language & Literary Skills Development
• • Organize and supervise reading programs, spelling/vocabulary drills, and public speaking or
• debate sessions to strengthen learners’ language proficiency.
• • Guide students in the correct use of grammar, punctuation, comprehension techniques, and
• essay/composition writing structures.
• • Facilitate literary appreciation through class readings, drama performances, poetry recitals,
• and creative writing clubs.
• • Coordinate with school administration on procurement of set texts, readers, dictionaries, and
• other language/literature resource materials.
• • Organize debates, drama festivals, storytelling competitions, or literary exhibitions that
• reinforce classroom learning with real-world application.
• Student Guidance & Mentorship
• • Mentor students interested in language, communication, media, law, and literature-related
• career paths, including further studies.
• • Encourage participation in debate clubs, drama clubs, journalism/writing clubs, competitions,
• quizzes, and academic exhibitions.
• • Provide guidance and support to students struggling with English Language or Literature
• concepts, including extra tuition where needed.
• • Model discipline, articulate communication, and a strong work ethic that inspires confidence
• in language and literary skills, and reflects Christian values.
• Resource & Records Management
• • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance, and continuous assessment
• in line with school policy.
• • Contribute to the budgeting and procurement process for textbooks, set texts, readers,
• dictionaries, and teaching aids.
• • Ensure proper care, maintenance, and stock control of textbooks, set texts, and instructional
• materials, including library/reading corner resources where applicable.
• • Maintain an organized bank of past papers, model essays, and revision aids to support
• examination preparation.
• Teamwork & Collaboration
• • Work collaboratively with the Director of Studies and fellow subject teachers to align
• academic planning.
• • Participate in departmental meetings, staff briefings, and school-wide events.
• • Collaborate with school leadership on co-curricular activities such as debate, drama, and
• public speaking programs.
• • Engage parents and the local community in supporting students’ reading culture and
• language development where appropriate.

• Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Education, with English Language and Literature
• in English as teaching subjects, or a related field.
